Message from Mrs. Rowena Lines, Head of HIS

Since coming to Hsinchu in 1981, we have seen a gently busy agricultural town develop into a vibrant hi-tech, research and development city. Simultaneously, HIS has developed from the original two teacher school with eighteen students to its present approaching 200, and is still undergoing exciting expansion programs to provide the best education environment for the international community in Hsinchu. Over the decades the school has developed and matured, but was previously constricted by the size of its campus and location. In 2007 we relocated to our great new campus, and are now very comfortably settled into our new home. Since its very small beginnings, we at HIS have never lost sight of our goals. Primarily, we aim to offer a strong academic program founded on sound educational principles and, above all, on the personal well-being of every student.

"Nothing is more exciting or rewarding than seeing the excitement of a child wholeheartedly pursuing an idea, the joy of finding a solution, or of finding other tangents to follow and explore."

Children come to HIS from all over the world, leaving their communities, extended families, friends, even pets. They find themselves in an alien environment where very often they cannot communicate outside the family, cannot read directions, road or store signs, and their parents are trying to balance their children needs with their own pressures in adjusting to fitting into a new location and workplace. Our primary focus when families come to us, from the initial query/visit through the child entire time at our school, is to give them a sense of security and a warm welcome to a new family. Children thrive best and are best motivated to adopt productive learning attitudes in an atmosphere of warmth, security, affection, mutual respect, and good humour.

"Children thrive best and are best motivated to adopt productive learning attitudes in an atmosphere of warmth, security, affection, mutual respect, and good humour."

If children love coming to school, are confident that their teachers care for them, feel able to approach anyone at school with any problem or surprise they want to share, and are surrounded by a nurturing, stimulating environment, then they will learn because they want to. Creating this attitude and sustaining the motivation, is the keystone for developing a lifelong creative mind that delights in exploring and absorbing. Nothing is more exciting or rewarding than seeing the excitement of a child wholeheartedly pursuing an idea, the joy of finding a solution, or of finding other tangents to follow and explore. This whole process is vital to the full development of the person the child will become.

The world of our children in the future will be very different to the world we know. Our children need to develop inner strength with strong characters which will allow them to be creative and adaptable, compassionate and aware. They need the confidence to accept themselves as people of value and integrity, and the fortitude and humour to be able to cope with changes and setbacks. I have loved seeing HIS develop and sharing its unique warmth with our families and faculty. In 1981, our dream came true when Mr. Lines and I first started HIS. The dream evolved and expanded, and now we are sharing the excitement of our friendly and beautiful facility where we can all dream new dreams, expand horizons, and work together at HIS towards achieving a whole new future for our children where the sky is the limit!
